Surface Preparation: Specialist Techniques, Real-World Demands
Services: Surface Preparation
Surface preparation is one of those services that often sits in the background, but it’s absolutely essential. At WJ Industrial, it’s the foundation of everything we do. Over the past 14 years, we’ve developed our capabilities, grown our team, and evolved with the industry. What began with two vans and four people is now a 30-strong operation with one of the UK’s most comprehensive fleets of surface preparation equipment.
A Sector That’s Moved With the Times
WJ Industrial started with surface preparation, and while we’ve since expanded into coatings, prep remains at the core. It’s what enables long-lasting finishes, strong adhesion, and minimal rework. Whether we’re on a hospital floor or a highway project, the principles are the same—do the groundwork properly, and the result will hold up. It’s that simple.
Choosing the Right Tool for the Job
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to surface preparation. Different substrates, sectors, and project goals require different tools. WJ Industrial works across steel, concrete, asphalt, and resin flooring, tailoring the preparation method to suit the surface condition, environment, and what’s going on top—whether that’s a resin coating, anti-skid system, or polished finish.
Some techniques remove significant thickness from concrete. Others prepare delicate substrates for precision finishes. Some are suited to live environments where noise and dust must be controlled. Others are built for speed and volume on major infrastructure sites. The key is selecting the right approach—and applying it well.
Techniques Designed for Precision and Productivity
Scarifying
Scarifying removes thermoplastic coatings, concrete layers, or epoxy paints using high-speed rotating tungsten carbide cutters. These are mounted on drums that can be tailored by size, cutter configuration, and tip style. The process leaves a textured surface, ideal for subsequent coating or adhesive application.
We operate both pedestrian and ride-on scarifiers, suitable for confined areas or large-scale sites. Machines run on diesel, petrol, or electric and are designed to function with 99% dust-free efficiency, minimising environmental impact and reducing airborne contaminants. Scarifying works particularly well when combined with other techniques like captive shot blasting. Learn More >
Captive Shot Blasting
Captive shot blasting delivers high-speed steel shot at a surface to remove contaminants, rust, or old coatings. It simultaneously vacuums the debris, resulting in a clean, profiled substrate without mess. WJ Industrial operates 88 diesel rider machines that can prepare approximately 1,500sqm a shift. For highways, our lorry-mounted systems can reach up to 5,000sqm per shift, making this a high-output, efficient solution for steel and concrete surfaces. Learn More >
Concrete Planing
Planing reduces surface levels with high precision, removing up to 100mm of material while producing minimal dust. It’s particularly useful in live environments like food production or retail, where disruption must be minimised. Our electric-powered planers are compact, efficient, and quiet, making them ideal for sensitive environments. Learn More >
In a recent project in Grimsby, we used this system to remove flooring inside frozen fish warehouses, operating in temperature-controlled spaces without compromising air quality. We’ve also deployed this approach across large retail sites, removing floor tiles and vinyl coverings before grinding residual adhesives.
Diamond Grinding
Diamond grinding delivers a smooth, clean surface ideal for coating or polishing. WJ Industrial machines use interchangeable diamond segments—coarse for tough removal, fine for finish. This allows us to calibrate abrasion levels as needed.
Our standout machine is the Bull, the only 2.2-metre, three-headed grinder in the UK. Where traditionally multiple grinders and several operators would be needed, the Bull allows two operators to complete the same work, cutting labour, time, and disruption. Its remote operation also allows detailed edge work, maintaining high accuracy across large spaces.
Diamond grinding also forms the foundation for polished concrete. By progressing through finer grits, we can achieve a reflective, glass-like finish that’s increasingly popular in industrial and retail settings. Unlike coatings, polished concrete doesn’t wear down in the same way—it enhances the existing slab’s resilience. Learn More >
Jet Drying
Originally developed in-house to counter weather delays, WJ Industrial jet dryers use adapted jet engines to remove surface moisture rapidly. Used widely on highways to prepare surfaces before treatment, these systems have also been deployed in more unconventional settings—from supporting world record skateboarding events in Derby Forest to drying film sets during a Fast & Furious production in central London.
Jet drying significantly reduces project downtime, especially in the unpredictable UK climate. It’s become a vital part of our delivery model for surface preparation in open-air environments. Learn More >
Applied Across Diverse Sectors
Our clients span sectors as varied as aviation, highways, healthcare, and retail. Each one has different drivers: airports require high tolerances; hospitals demand clean, quiet operations; and highways need speed. We take the time to understand each site’s constraints and build our approach around that. Whether we’re working in a frozen warehouse or a live school, the goal is the same: efficient, professional delivery with no compromise on quality.
Built on Standards, Delivered Through Practice
Quality isn’t just about the result—it’s about the process. WJ Industrial holds ISO 9001 and is actively working towards ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. We’re accredited under NHSS 13 and work to both national and sector-specific standards. We also work with external requirements, like tailored flatness specs for automated warehouse systems. We adapt to whatever’s needed to get the right outcome for the client.
Looking Ahead
The next 10 years will be shaped by better equipment, more efficient techniques, and increasingly high standards around safety and sustainability. WJ Industrial will continue to invest in new technology and smarter working practices. Because ultimately, what matters to our clients is getting the job done quickly, safely, and to spec.
Conclusion
Surface preparation is where the success of every coating system begins. WJ Industrial combines technical expertise, flexible delivery, and specialist equipment to ensure surfaces are properly prepared, no matter the sector, surface, or schedule. By integrating multiple techniques and adapting to the constraints of each project, we deliver surface preparation that supports durable, long-term performance.
